Why shear care is not the same job as clipper care

A clipper blade is a flat pair of interlocking combs that gets swapped out when it dulls. A barber shear is a single pivoting tool built around one screw, so its wear pattern is different: the edges dull from use exactly like a clipper blade does, but the pivot also loosens over time from the same repeated opening-and-closing motion, and hair, product residue, and moisture build up specifically at the pivot joint where the two blades meet. Treating a shear like a clipper (brush it off and move on) skips the two things that actually keep a shear cutting cleanly for years: pivot lubrication and tension.

Daily cleaning routine

  • After every single client: wipe both blades down with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove hair clippings and any product residue before it dries onto the steel.
  • At the end of every day: do a more thorough wipe-down of the full blade length and the pivot area, checking for any hair wound around the screw itself.
  • Never leave a shear wet. Moisture left on carbon or stainless blades, especially overnight, is one of the fastest ways to introduce rust spotting at the pivot and along the cutting edge.
  • Disinfect between every client using an EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectant designed for barber tools, separate from the cleaning step above. This is a regulatory requirement in most jurisdictions, not a courtesy, and the exact standard varies by state and licensing board, so check your own cosmetology board's rule rather than assuming one state's requirement applies everywhere. Disinfecting is not a substitute for wiping the blade dry, and wiping is not a substitute for disinfecting.

Oiling the pivot: how often and how

The pivot screw is the one part of a shear that needs regular lubrication, not the full blade length.

  • One drop of shear-specific oil at the pivot, opened and closed a few times to work the oil into the joint, then wiped clean of any excess.
  • Daily-use professionals (roughly eight or more cuts a day) generally oil once at the end of each day, sometimes more on an especially heavy day.
  • Lower-volume or home users can often go several uses between oiling, since the pivot sees less repeated motion.
  • Never use a generic household oil. Shear-specific oil is formulated to stay put at a small pivot joint instead of running off the blade or gumming up with hair and dust the way a heavier household oil can.

Tension adjustment: the drop test

Tension is how snugly the pivot screw holds the two blades together, and it drifts looser over normal use long before the edges themselves go dull. Checking it takes under a minute and needs no tools beyond the shear itself:

  1. Open the shear to roughly a 45-degree angle.
  2. Hold it by the finger ring (not the blades) and let go of the other handle.
  3. A correctly tensioned shear falls closed on its own weight and comes to a gentle stop partway, without swinging past center or slamming shut.
  4. If it swings all the way shut or keeps oscillating, tension is too loose. Snug the pivot screw a small amount and retest.
  5. If it barely moves or feels sticky when you try to open it, tension is too tight. Back the screw off slightly and retest.

Recheck tension at the start of each shift rather than assuming yesterday's setting still holds. A shear that is too loose cuts unevenly and can pinch hair instead of slicing it cleanly; one that is too tight fatigues the hand faster over a full day and accelerates edge wear at the pivot.

5 signs your shears need attention right now

Stop watching the calendar and start watching the shear itself. Any of these means it is time to act, regardless of when you last cleaned, oiled, or sharpened:

  1. Pulling, snagging, or bending hair instead of slicing cleanly through it.
  2. A stiff, dry, or squeaky pivot when opening and closing the blades.
  3. The drop test fails, either swinging fully shut or barely moving at all.
  4. Visible rust spotting, a nick, or a chip anywhere along the cutting edge.
  5. Hand fatigue that sets in faster than usual during a normal-length cut, often an early sign of tension creeping too tight.

One of these on its own is worth a quick check. Two or more together usually means the shear is overdue for real attention, not just a wipe-down.

Storage between shifts

  • Store shears dry, in a case or sheath rather than loose in a drawer where the edge can knock against other tools.
